Inside Lebanon’s Information Branch: what the ISF unit does

The branch is part of the Internal Security Forces, not a catch-all name for Lebanese intelligence. Its public record shows intelligence-led police work carried out with judicial authorities.

The heritage file

Where the land keeps its memory

Jezzine and Maghdouché hold two forms of southern heritage: craft and landscape in the highlands; pilgrimage and layered belief on a hill above the coast.

Water, pine and the artisan’s hand

Jezzine is read through water and work: its waterfall and limestone cliffs, the pine country around Bkassine, and a souk where distinctive inlaid cutlery remains the town’s signature craft.

1898

The old Serail—today’s Municipal Palace—was completed in classical Ottoman style.

The historic market still gathers cafés, workshops and the cutlery tradition in the town centre.

A hill shaped by waiting and memory

At Our Lady of Mantara, Christian tradition holds that Mary waited in a grotto while Jesus preached in Sidon. The sanctuary’s story layers ancient worship, a sacred cave and a modern place of pilgrimage.

1721

The grotto was rediscovered and restored under Eftemios Saïfi, the Melkite Catholic bishop of Sidon.

A road through time

Traces of a Roman road near the shrine speak to the old route between the interior and the coast.
